Nate Miller leads Global Fishing Watch’s applied research team in support of the organization’s global and regional program initiatives. By harnessing innovative datasets, he seeks to deliver impact-driven research that enables improved ocean governance through greater transparency of human activity at sea.

With a background in marine biology, Nate brings more than 15 years of research experience to the Global Fishing Watch team. His work focused on marine organisms and their response to various environmental changes, which led him to spend several seasons in Antarctica conducting research. Nate earned a doctorate in zoology and a master’s degree in data science from University of New Haven. Nate also served as an adjunct professor of biology at San Francisco State University. Nate is an avid backpacker and cyclist.
